Locking mechanism is super easy and
effective, tho takes a bit to get used to. Also as someone else noted it's quite easy to unlock when you're in stride rope walking. Not terrible to prevent with better technique. zip tie might help. Ascending is a breeze at any altitude. And for those that prefer, the rope can be kicked out when the lock is disengaged. About my only gripe is the most prominent function, the locking mechanism. It's brilliant in theory, and practice. However, I can't seem to shake the feeling that they installed it upside down. Shouldn't it lock by pressing the lever down versus flipping it up? Not sure if that's even possible. But it seems most folks ascend bicycle pedal forward. In this scenario, with sloppy technique, the heel of your other foot can disable the lock mechanism (has happened). Overall all, it does what it says, and is my new fav ascender.
